About
A year later we took a brave step into the unknown and refurbished a beautiful old store in the heart of Edinburgh city center. Here we held great parties, sold the largest selection of beard oil in the world, opened a barbers, had our own cafe and really just made the most inclusive and best independent store we could. We even got listed in the Wallpaper City Guide. We loved this space and the community it was home to. It allowed us to really experiment with what retail meant and make some great friends.
Richard Murphy the Brotique || the Art of Shaving
Richard Murphy the Brotique store owner explain here complete guide about art of shaving
Brotique Guide to a Wet Shave
Shaving. An often overlooked practice is a staple in millions of men’s daily routine to keep them looking fresh faced.
Studies show that the average man spends a total of 85 days shaving, a staggering statistic which shows just how much time we devote to dealing with our facial hair.
What are the advantages of a traditional wet shave you may ask? The answer is there are many. Whilst offering a closer shave, a traditional wet shave can also offer numerous benefits to the skin such as reducing irritation and razor burn and even preventing ingrown hairs.
A Traditional Shave
Using straight or double edged safety razor is also an extremely relaxing experience and in many ways a ritual. The combination of a delightfully scented artisan shaving soap, a beautiful sharp razor and the shock of a sharp aftershave can turn a previously laborious early morning task into a process that leaves you feeling relaxed, looking sharp refreshed and ready to start the day.
In addition to this a wet shave can also work out better for you financially. Abandon the endless cartridge refills that cost a small fortune every few weeks and electric shaving razors that become rapidly out-dated. Instead, by swapping over to a straight razor or safety razor, you’ll be purchasing a timeless piece of shaving technology that (if treated well) can literally last you a lifetime.
DOVO Straight Razor
Founded in 1906 in Westphalia, DOVO have been using the finest steel craft skills in order to bring the user quality razors and perfect shaves for over a century. Here at The Brotique we offer a range of high quality, beautiful razors from DOVO including the DOVO Best Quality Black Celluloid Open Razor, a 5/ 8” stainless stell razor with a half hollow ground etched blade and a sturdy black resin handle. Alternatively if you’re looking for a razor with a little more vibrancy in its design, look no further than the DOVO Mother of Pearl Open Razor, featuring elegant gold etching and a faux mother of pearl handle, bringing some style and sophistication to your shave.
In order to keep that straight razor sharp and well maintained a strop is an essential purchase. Thankfully we have the perfect offering from Men Rock, this leather strop is the perfect tool for sharpening and honing your straight razors. Crafted from leather and with a clasp to attach the strop for ease of sharpening, it will ensure you always have the sharpest shave.
Merkur & Muhle
If the open blade of a straight razor may seem a tad intimidating, fear not, for we also stock a selection of DE safety razors from esteemed brands Merkur, a subsidary of DOVO and Muhle, hailing from the picturesque Erz Mountains in Germany.
With regards to our Merkur range, the 34C Chrome Heavy Duty Safety Razor is a closed comb, long screw mounting double edge blade razor, whilst the 34 G Gold Safety Razor is its gold plated equivalent adding a touch of pizazz to your daily shave.

In addition to this Muhle also offers the ‘Twist Cap’ R89 with a mechanism that allows for easy insertion of blades, a perfect for beginners to wet shaving.

Richard Murphy Introducing two new destinations for men
Since 2013, The Brotique has traded in products which men use everyday. It's been quite a journey, over the last four years we've learned what is most important to us: helping our customers to make the right decision.
Our Edinburgh store, on 39 Queen Street, has become the launch pad for a new venture of ours - Quarters. Quarters is the culmination of everything we've learned about our customers over the years. It is a destination where men come to find life's essentials - a direct response to a world of choice anxiety, hard-sell, and white noise.
But The Brotique will also grow, as the store embarks on it's next chapter as a leading authority on men's grooming - reaching a global audience as a digital-first store.
Quarters is...
Quarters is about clarity. We believe that life's essentials are timeless. Ours is a generation fixated on the new, but the truth is that craftsmanship that has been honed over time holds much greater value. Quarters makes its own definitive range of essential grooming products, apparel and accessories for life. It also carries a seasonal collection of products with a proven heritage and a rootedness is craft.
Quarters is now open at 39 Queen Street, and its digital store is coming soon. http://Quarters.life
which means the Brotique is...
The Brotique is about expertise. The new digital store will continue to carry an ever expanding range of men's grooming products, from old favorite’s to new arrivals.
This is a journey for us - our Edinburgh store is still in transition, but we want to keep you up to date as Quarters and The Brotique really come into their own. You can subscribe below to hear our news.

Summer is fast approaching, and with it comes holidays and adventure. But there’s one part of planning a trip away that’s never fun; packing. You’d pay someone else to do it if you could, but gone are the days when you’re Mum would remember everything you needed, plus the kitchen sinks. It’s up to you now. So we thought we’d give you a little help.
Now, these aren’t the type of things you’d (necessarily) pack for a week-long trek through Snowdonia. We’re thinking more along the lines of lounging around restaurants in Rome, going for casual bicycle tours in Amsterdam and visiting swanky bars in Copenhagen. Places where you want to have a ball, but maintain a well-groomed and stylish look at the same time. Here are the tools you’ll need to achieve both.
Muhle Travel Shaving Brush
If you like to keep it clean and sharp at all times, you can’t go wrong travelling with a collapsible shaving brush. Muhle have brought out a synthetic silvertip fibre travel brush with a black anodized aluminium handle that also acts as a case. When you’re ready to pack up and head to your next destination, simple unscrew the brush head and slip it down into the handle cavity. Pop the lid on and you’re good to go! No matter how much your bag is banged around during transit, your brush bristles won’t be damaged. The silvertip fibres are also made for quick-drying purposes for further convenience.
The Bearded Bastard Beard Oil
Travel PackIf you’re a man that prefers to keep a luscious beard, The Bearded Bastard Beard Oil Travel Pack is the perfect companion for your ventures. Pick one miniature bottle of beard oil or pack the whole tin. There are five scents to choose from, and the tin is a handy container for other knick-knacks that you pick up along the way. Beard oil will keep your facial hair and skin from getting brittle and itchy in dry, hot weather. Perfect for those trips to the Mediterranean!
Zeus Travel Shampoo
If you’re heading to Southern Europe or the Asia Pacific for Summer, you might often get back to your hotel after a day of exploring feeling sweaty and dirty. Just as you’d wash your body and hair before heading back out for dinner and a night on the town, it’s important not to forget about your beard too! Zeus Travel Beard Shampoo is perfectly sized to pop in your toiletry bag for those times when your beard needs a good scrub to rid it of the days grime. The chamomile and green tea extract present in the ingredients are also perfect for soothing skin (heavenly when you’ve experienced sunburn!).
Zeus Pocket Beard Brush
Is the humidity at your holiday destination making your beard hair frizz in an untamed fashion? This can be super frustrating, especially when you’ve put oil through it, and it still won’t sit the way you want. The Zeus Boar Bristle Pocket Beard Brush will assist you in achieving a polished finish to your beard, without the scratchiness that other bristled brushes tend to have. It’ll evenly distribute oils for a natural shine. After use, place it in its cloth bag to prevent bristle damage or it catching on other items in your luggage.
Layrite Original Hair Pomade
Ditch the large and clunky tub of hair wax for the Layrite’s travel-sized Original Pomade. It’s the best of both worlds because it holds firmly, like a wax, but washes out easily with water, like a gel. It’s the most convenient styling product on-the-go. Layrite’s pomade is made to tame hair of all types: thick, thin, curly or straight. It can be used to achieve a range of hairstyles that will hold through even the windiest of weather!
Marvis Toothpaste Toothpaste:

Stick with classic, refreshing mint or branch out and choose a fun flavour to reflect your getaway experience. Amarelli Licorice, anyone? You’re on holidays, after all, it’s time for a treat.Muhle Travel Manicure SetThere’s nothing quite like the sting when you tear a nail down to the quick. Richard Murphy the Brotique ||The Definitive Beard Balm Guide
Richard Murphy The Brotique Store Owner. The Brotique is professional men grooming store here you get complete men grooming services like haircut, beard styling and all the quality products for your beard and hair.
In this blog Richard Murphy explain about beard balm guide and difference between beard oil and beard balm.
Definitive Beard Balm Guide
Firstly, let’s clear the air on a common misconception in beard care: beard balm is not the same as beard oil.
What is beard oil?
Beard oil is a leave-in moisturiser that contains carrier oils such as jojoba and argan oil and essential oils such as lemongrass and eucalyptus. These oils assist in cultivating the best possible conditions to grow your beard hair. Because beard oil contains fragrant essential oils, it also makes for excellent cologne. The key benefits of using beard oil are as follows:
Softens your beard hair.
Moisturises the skin under your beard.
Reduces itchiness.
Prevents dandruff.
Beard oil is best for bearded men looking for a simple, light and quick moisturising aid for their beard.
What is beard balm?
Beard balm is also a leave-in moisturiser with many of the same key ingredients as beard oil, but the key difference here is that it’s simultaneously used as a styling product. Beard balm often includes beeswax and types of butter such as shea or cocoa that assists styling. It typically has a waxy and malleable consistency but does come in both solid and cream forms. The key benefits of using beard balm are as follows:
Shapes your beard and tames flyaways.
Moisturises your beard hair and skin.
Prevents dandruff.
Makes your beard look thicker.
Beard balm is best for men with long beards that need extra taming. It’s also great for guys experiencing patchy or brittle beards, who want to achieve a fuller, thicker look.
Should beard oil and beard balm be used together?
In short, yes, it can be, but it depends on your beard type. Beard oil and beard balm are two of the best beard care products that you can use, and when teamed together, create an unstoppable force of luscious bearded glory.
However, if you have a short beard, you can probably get away with only using beard oil. A short beard won’t be long enough to need styling yet, and the light oils will provide all of the essential moisture that it needs to encourage healthy growth.
If you have a long beard, both oil and balm should be part of your beard care routine. It’s a good idea to get into the habit of using a beard oil every day, and a beard balm once or twice a week, depending on your styling needs. For example, you probably don’t need to style your beard if you’re hanging around at home all day, but will still want to provide it with those vitamin-giving oils to keep it moisturised and healthy. Use beard balm when you’re taming your beard to go out, or once or twice a week to encourage a fuller, thicker beard.
Types of beard balm.
Phew! Now that we have those basics covered, let’s take a look at the two main types of beard balm; solid and cream.
Solid beard balm.
Solid beard balm is the most common consistency and usually comes in a tin. It’s quite thick, yet smooth and waxy; best for shaping and holding your beard hairs in place.
Cream beard balm.
Cream beard balm is a happy medium between beard oil and solid beard balm in terms of shaping and finish. Cream beard balm is great for a light styling hold and gives your beard a polished finish without the shine that beard oil can often leave.
How to apply beard balm.
Now onto the practical component! Beard balm is best applied to your beard after you’ve showered and once it’s dried. You can apply beard balm in three easy steps.
Step 1: Scoop out a pea-sized amount of beard balm from the tin (or squeeze the same amount out of the tube for cream balms) and rub the wax into your hands until it’s fully melted. The amount that you will need to use will depend upon the length and thickness of your beard, so it might take a little bit of trial and error to get the perfect quantity. Just remember that less is more with beard balm - don’t go scooping out teaspoons of it!
Step 2: Work the product through your beard with your fingers, from the roots of your beard hair to the ends. Don’t forget to massage it into the skin underneath your beard too, as this will prevent dry skin and dandruff.
Step 3: If you wish to distribute the balm more evenly through your beard hair, try brushing it through with a boar bristle beard brush. This will also help you shape and detangle your beard. Alternatively, you can scrunch it with your fists to accentuate the curl.
Best beard balms.
So, now that you know all about why beard balm is one of the best beard products, and how to apply and use it, which one should you buy? The Brotique stock a wide range of beard balms from several different brands, but our standout seller is always The Bearded Bastard. We just can’t fault it. The Bearded Bastard regularly bring out new ranges in a variety of scents and have gathered somewhat of a cult following amongst bearded men worldwide. We also like to champion local brands of a high calibre, however, which is why we stock a range of British and Scottish-made beard styling products too. Here are our top picks.
The Bearded Bastard Woodsman Beard Balm
The Woodsman is easily The Bearded Bastard’s best-selling beard balm. It’s their original range, with a delightfully subtle woody smell. If you’re looking for a scent that really packs a punch, Fire smells like a bonfire full of chilli’s and is bound to give off a certain “don’t F**k with me” vibe. It’s smoky, it’s unique, and we love it!
The Bearded Bastard Early Riser Beard Balm
Early Riser is The Bearded Bastard’s Spring/Summer collection and is perfect for all you sweet tooth’s out there. It’s inspired by all the best things involved with getting up in the morning, including coffee, pancakes and maple syrup. Warning: you might want to eat it.
The Bearded Bastard Simply Vanilla Beard Balm
Vanilla is another subtle classic when it comes to beard balm scents. It’s an understated and smooth crowd pleaser. It’s perfect for everyday use because the scent won’t overpower your cologne.
The Bearded Bastard Opium Den Beard Balm
If you’re looking for a scent with a bit more depth and complexity about it, Opium Den certainly delivers. It’s aromatic, rich and empowering. And a little bit enchanting. Perfect for when you’re looking to make an impression or woo a certain special someone.

Looking for some beard inspiration? If you’re thinking of changing up your beard style or growing a beard (welcome, hairy comrade!) Spring is the perfect time to do so. Short beards will be all the rage this Summer. They’re fresh, they’re stylish, and they allow the breeze to waft through your facial hair onto your skin. We take a look at some of the most popular short beard styles for 2019, and types of facial hair they’re most suited to.
Short, sparse beard with fade
If you want to combine a slick hairdo with a styled beard, this combination is a winner. Beards faded up into the hairline are pretty commonplace, but this hairstyle offers something a little different. Perfect for guys who find it difficult to grow thick facial hair, this type of short beard will allow the sun’s rays to hit your face, providing it with that life-giving vitamin B. Having beard hair that’s thin enough to allow sunlight to touch your skin underneath can also decrease your likelihood of getting dandruff.
Thick, lush short beard
Got a full, long and luscious beard that you want to spruce up for the warmer weather? Many long-bearded fellows will be thinking of a little trim for Summer, and this style is the perfect way to maintain that glorious mane without it ending in a sweaty, tangled mess every day. The style is pretty uniform in length, with a mustache trimmed to your lip line.
Hardly there short beard
More like a week’s worth of growth than a beard, if this is your first time sporting facial hair, this style is easy to maintain and looks effortlessly stylish. The trick here is to see if you have any patches where your facial hair doesn’t grow and ensure that it’s symmetrical on both sides of your face (you may need to do a little grooming with a razor). This will allow you to judge what the best style is for your beard in the long run, too. It involves a fair amount of trial and error to begin with but don’t despair! You’ll become one with the quirks of your facial hair soon enough.
Clean, sharp short beard
If sharp and short is your goal, this is the style for you. It’ll require care and attention, and you may need to visit a barber to achieve the look (a steady hand and a straight razor will be needed), but the results will definitely be rewarding. It’s clean, neat and precise; ideal for the office, out on the town and dinner with the parents.
